iPhone 4 vs HTC Thunderbolt... FIGHT!

Its a given that I have been wanting the iPhone since January 2007... so for 4 years now, and saying its a given is actually putting it rather lightly. To give you an idea of how badly I wanted that phone, I can tell you that I distinctly remember being on a boat, in the middle of the sea off the coast of Hawaii, dolphin watching, and looking down at my watch and thinking, "The iPhone just got released on the East coast." Thats how crazy obsessed I was.  Hell, I even bought the thing while in Hawaii, and told my parents I was switching to AT&T no matter how much it would cost me to jump off the Verizon family plan and pay my own way for the iPhone. Three weeks later, as the phone sat in front of me unopened, I realized I could never afford to be on AT&T without my parents support, and so I returned the phone, and vowed to wait until Verizon received it in a few months or so to get it.

4 years later, here we are, and I cant say Im still drooling and slobbering from anticipation. In September of 2007, I picked up the iPod touch, my only savior that helped me weather the storm of not having an iPhone. And every September since 2007, I bought a new iPod that came with many of the features the iPhone was given just 2 months earlier. And so, I continued to wait patiently.

But then Droid happened to Verizon in November of 2009. And suddenly, Verizon had a geek phone to call its own. Not only that, it had a killer app that even the almighty iPhone didnt have: Free Navigation, direct from Google Maps. It even had voice search, voice dial, voice-to-text, voice-anything. And it was insanely accurate. And suddenly the iPhone wasnt the only game in town anymore. The phrase "iPhone Killer" got thrown around a lot prior to the Droid series of phones, as a way of decreeing an upcoming phone that would finally best the iPhone in all ways. The Droid series never got called an "iPhone Killer," yet the phrase stopped getting tossed around as Droid picked up steam, and more and more awesome phones got announced - all on Verizon. I dont think one Droid phone every had a chance of contending with the iPhone, but I think the Droid series may have put a serious damper on the iPhone awesomeness.

I wont spend a great deal of time explaining what a Droid can do, but lets just sum it up by saying that Verizon's first marketing campaign for its Droid was simply, "Droid Does." And it "does" really well.

And this week, Droid Does got a WHOLE lot better. Not only did Verizon announce that faster wireless data speeds would be coming to Verizon phones this year, but all the phones announced were Droid phones, and they would be here in the next 3 months. This faster speed is referred to as 4G LTE, similar to what Sprint has with their network. This means I would go from downloading youtube videos or internet webpages at 256kb per second to downloading them at 5MB per second (over 10 times an increase). This is CRAZY fast, and the best part is, Verizon isnt planning on raising their prices. AND its already in my area, so all I have to do is buy a 4G LTE phone, and Ive got instant amazingness in my hand.



One phone Verizon announced this week in particular, has caught my attention: The HTC Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt look STUNNING (pictured below on the left). Its got a huge touchscreen, a super fast processor, an amazing UI, and its got 4G LTE to boot. HTC's first marketing campaign for this phone even said, "This is not your dream phone. Its the one after that." And from everything I have heard from people who have reviewed this phone, its pretty amazing.

So after this phone was announced, I was all over getting it. And then THE VERY NEXT DAY, Verizon announced that they have something else to announce this coming Tuesday the 11th. Why would Verizon hold a second press conference so soon after a major, major one? iPhone, everyone and the Wall Street Journal screamed. Verizon iPhone.

Which is actually why we are here.  This morning I woke up to rumors turned reports from credible individuals and journals that YES, INDEED AND ACTUALLY ARE TRUE, Verizon will announce the imminent release of the iPhone for its network on Tuesday, January 11th, 2011 at 11am. Or, 1/11/11 at 11am.

After 4 years of lusting after the Verizon iPhone, my first sleepy, half-awake thought was OMG BREAK OPEN MY PIGGY BANK I WILL NEED PENNIES AND NICKLES NOWWWWWWWWWW IPHONE IZ 2 BE MINEEEEEEEEZ.

But then after the insane hallucinations of Verizon iPhones everywhere, I started to re-think my decision through the long term. What about the navigation app I use at least once a week with my Droid? What about all the 4G LTE phones that were announced just two days ago (The Verizon iPhone will not have 4G LTE at launch)? What about the HTC Thunderbolt I was already cutting out my kidney for???? This was problematic.

So I decided, like any kid these days, that instead of thinking through my decision in my own head privately, I would blog and publicly record the whole ordeal online.

So here we are. 3..... 2..... 1..... iPhone 4 vs HTC Thunderbolt - FIGHT!!!!!

...... ummmm...... on second thought, Im kinda exhausted after writing all this.

Lets just do a pros and cons thingy and call it good.

iPhone:
Pros: Apple, A bazillion neat apps, sleek design, syncs with my iCal, Email, Music, etc Flawlessly, i LOVEEEEE the touch screen keyboard, and have gotten really good at it over the years in trusting it. reliable software, angry birds, attracts quality developers, has facetime, itunes mobile store for buying music when i hear it on the radio, it just works.....
Cons: You cant tweak the software, doesnt have 4G, Id be locked into the iPhone 4 for 2 years before getting the ability to get the new version, Id have to switch over all my stuff from android, no wireless tethering, and id lose navigation and earth and other cool google maps shit.

Thunderbolt:
Pros: 4G LTE amaZing speeds, google maps, navigation, tweak it to my hearts content, free syncing to google.... calendar widget to remind me.....
Cons: big phone, have to use google, doesnt have itunes music store or my music, has trouble syncing my calendars, cant use my r.l@tme.com email account, doesnt have all the cool apps, apps are kinda buggy sometimes, keyboard typing sucks, etc, etc.....

Its been One Week....

My apologies. I wrote this post two weeks ago, and never posted it. The weekend I tried to post it, I got SUPER sick. And this week has just been a blur with my new exercise regime......

SO! Pretend its two weeks ago.

Over the last week, many of you probably noticed some changes in my patterns.  First and foremost, I stopped tweeting on a regular basis. The first thing you should know is that Im totally fine, and nothing bad happened to me. The fact of the matter is, I stopped tweeting because most of my thoughts these days involves either frustrations with my job (which isnt fun to read on Twitter), or my thoughts about how different the kids are that are work with (which prolly flirts with FERPA violations if I talked about it).

So! Im gonna kinda do a run through of everything thats been going in my life, and what the next year looks like, all planned out.

First, I got a job working for the Dreamcatcher program in Boulder, a Direct Instruction program that helps students who are behind catch up to grade level quickly and successfully. Interesting fact - the dude who invented Direct Instruction actually taught at the University of Oregon a few years ago.

I got involved with this program because Dreamcatchers is hired by the school my mom works at to help the students who are the most behind get caught up. AKA Remedial instruction.

My mom works at Justice High School, a school for students who are all legally involved in the court system, generally have a criminal history, and were either expelled or not allowed to attend any other school. Another words, this is the last chance school for most of these students. So the makeup of this school is about 95% Latino students, which all combined, makes this a VERY different group of students than what Im used to.  For example, on my VERY first day at work - two girls started fighting. And I dont mean fighting as in verbally, or even just slapping.  I mean full on, full out yanking of the hair, clawing at the face, and lots of blood dripping down both their faces once 6 people finally pulled them apart. Oh, and it happened again with two different girls on my second day. Yea. Different.

I spend my morning hours at Boulder Justice High, and spend my afternoon hours at Denver Justice High, another branch of the school.

However, instead of spending most of my time teaching, I find myself spending most of time babysitting or trying to coax these students into working instead of telling me to fuck off.

Its SOOOOO different than what Im used to. In any other place, when you approach a student with discipline of some sort, or some loss of privilege, and the student realizes that they need to apologize and get back to work or stop goofing around. At Justice High, they look at you like you are crazy to even try to tell them what to do, and then they laugh at you.

Its like Im having to start from scratch and re-learn everything I know about working with students. Instead of working from the top down, and bringing the students down a peg when something happens, I have to work from the bottom up, and really focus on positive reinforcement and using Love & Logic techniques.

Basically, this is HUGE opportunity for me to really develop my skills working with students, even though these students are in high school.  So I am grateful for the opportunity.

In terms of my tech dreams, most of that has gotten kicked to the way side for now. After I take the GRE in November, Ill start studying to get my Apple and Microsoft certifications so that tech shops will actually hire me. Right now, its just a flat no from most people.

So for now, Im tutoring students at CU in Computer Science, and I already have 2 students that Ive taken on, and 2 more that are interested. So all good money rolling in. (This was a MAJOR fail. The students sat down and I had NO CLUE what the devil they were talking about. I had to turn both tutoring offers down and switch to tutoring algebra and stuff. OOPS.)

Between all that and watching Nip Tuck with mom, I stay pretty busy these days. Anyways, Ill update more later.

LATER -

So now that ive been on the job for 3 weeks now, Ive noticed some things.

First of all, my fellow remedial teachers really dont have the backbone for this kind of job. ....I take that back. They do. Everyone does. We just dont use it and follow up when we should. The lot of us are empathetic towards the students. We dont want to send them to the office to get in trouble, so we threaten, and then DONT FOLLOW THROUGH.  How I allowed myself into this pattern, I dont know, but heres the bottom line.

Normal classrooms: 20 kids, 1 teacher, smooth as butter.

Us: 25 kids, grouped into 8 kids per room, TWO teachers per room, and we cant control them at all.

As you might be able to imagine, the schools are pretty pissed with our performance. And so am I.

But Im not in charge anymore. Decisions dont go through me, and my boss isnt super on the up and up with dealing with these issues. She wants to kill them with kindness. Well wake up, sweetheart. It aint working. We need solid structure before we befriend these kids.

Oy.

Other news........ ummm.......

My parents are making me pay my cell phone bill now, so yep, im trying to find someone on AT&T to jump onto their family plan with so i can FINALLY GET AN IPHONE. If your interested...... let me know.

Im studying a lot for the GRE now........ taking it Nov 8th......

Booked a trip to Florida from Nov 10th to the 18th...... seeing my cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc, all of which I havent seen in SIX YEARS. So yea, Im glad Im going.

Im getting out there in the gay scene more often, which im pretty happy about. But Im still trying to figure out a good friends routine. I love the people I have seen since Ive been home, but i see them too infrequently.  I need something more solid.

Oh, and on the DL........ i ordered a PS3, which will complete my trifecta of currrent gen video game consoles. As of this Friday, I will own an Xbox 360, a Wii, and a PS3.  Bwa-hahahahahahahaha.

So life is going ok! Could be better in some areas, but im pretty happy as it stands. Im doing something I enjoy, thats also VERY challenging, helps me with my weaknesses (cough*my patience levels*cough), and looks fantastic on a resume for something im doing on my OFF year.

Sorry for the lack of updates!  I promise ill pump more out as I go.  But as it stands, I roll out of bed at 7:30, and finally get back to my computer around 7:30. And with Fall TV making a comeback...... well...... blogs take a backseat I guess.  Oh well.

On the iPhone, Verizon and all these "January release" rumors

I know I have already talked about this in the past on Facebook, but the rumor mill REALLY has been speeding up now with post after post talking about the iPhone coming to Verizon in January.  Even my own SA boss, who doesnt follow this kind of news, emailed me to ask me if I was getting the new iPhone in January. I had to politely respond to her that it wasnt going to happen, but she just wasnt convinced.

So allow me to lay it out for you here, everything I know about the Verizon/iPhone rumors, including the most recent ones to pop up just today. And Ill make a point to quote what the experts are saying (which is what Ive been saying all along).

Ok, to start, everyone knows a couple of things. First, the Apple iPhone is wildly successful. Second, the iPhone is locked to AT&T in USA, but in other countries you can choose what carrier you get your iPhone on. Lastly, AT&T and Verizon are the two core wireless companies in the USA, so everyone assumes that the iPhone will eventually come to Verizon.

And way back in 2006, Apple approached Verizon FIRST to carry its iPhone on its network, and Verizon said no.  Apple wanted complete control over its software, while Verizon was too locked into its VZApps to let those go. So Apple and Verizon failed to reach a deal, and Apple when to AT&T, and the rest is history.

Until 2007, when AT&T started having troubles with so many iPhones on its network. Thats when, purportedly, Apple started rethinking sticking with AT&T, and seriously considered moving to Verizon alltogether.  Course, that would have meant creating a CDMA iPhone, which didnt exist at the time.  And a whole bunch of other problems too. If you are really interested, you can read the whole she-bang here. Im skipping over this part of the backstory cuz really, what does it matter? It didnt happen, and the main reason Apple stayed with AT&T anyways still had to do with one thing: the 5 year exclusivity contract between the two companies. And if Apple had bailed, it wouldnt have been pretty.

Lets skip forward to today, and all these rumors about the now apparently existent CDMA iPhone, and why people keep saying that this is the signal that the iPhone is coming to Verizon is January.

First of all, most of you, like my father on repeat occasions, needs a quick lesson in the ABC jumbo of wireless frequencies, and what all this CDMA GSM LTE 4G stuff means.

Lets start with GSM. GSM is the frequency used by most of the world for cell phone networks. Its vastly popular, and wide spread. In the USA, companies like T-Mobile and AT&T use GSM frequencies, complete with SIM cards that is the standard for GSM of tracking who is who is a cell phone. Your number is tied to your SIM card, not your phone. So if you pop out your SIM card and put it in another phone, boom there ya go. So when Apple wanted to launch the iPhone internationally, it was very easy to do so because the rest of the world already ran on GSM frequencies.

CDMA is an extremely unpopular wireless frequency used mainly in two places.  The first is in USA with Verizon and Sprint, and the second is in China, where CDMA is heavily used.  Everywhere else, CDMA frequencies are pretty scarce. So if Apple wanted to bring the iPhone to Verizon or Sprint or China, then it would need to re-tweak the iPhone with some new hardware to read CDMA frequencies. As of right now, no CDMA version of the iPhone is in existence.

Which is where all these rumors come in. Everyone has been hearing that Apple is about ready to enter production of their CDMA iPhone. And to everyone in America, this gives instant hope that Apple is about ready to give Verizon the iPhone.

Here are some of the reasons they think this:

1) Apple has a Verizon CDMA tour installed on their home campus in Cupertino, which was installed for testing of CDMA devices.
2) Apple has long been in talks with Verizon, and Apple AND Verizon both have a lot to gain by releasing an iPhone for Verizon.

So of course, everyone thinks the Apple making CDMA iPhones means that Verizon will be getting it in January when the CDMA version is released.

Well, I dont think so. And it all revolves around one core element. 4G and LTE.

Many of you know what 3G is. Its what wireless companies shove down our throats as we sit and watch TV, telling how us fast their 3G network is.

And you probably know what 4G is too, thanks to Sprint shoving its new 4G network down our throats as well.  And yes, 4G is about 10 times faster than 3G. Once 4G is nation-wide, you will LITERALLY have ethernet connection speeds wirelessly, anywhere you are. Really. And Sprint decided to partner with ClearWire, a WiMAX-frequency company, to start delivering 4G to its mobile wireless customers.  And so Sprint took off as the first 4G deployer.

But Verizon (and all the other wireless companies) also have plans for 4G.  Verizon is actually going to be next to bring the 4G, in the form of whats called LTE. LTE is also going to have blistering fast speeds, but will NOT operate on the same frequencies as WiMAX.

So yes, just like GSM and CDMA both provided 3G speeds, but on different frequencies, LTE and WiMAX will provide 4G speeds, but also on different frequencies.

OK. HERES WHERE IT ALL COMES TOGETHER.

AT&T has also announced that it will start building its 4G network as well, and has decided to use LTE as well as its frequency of choice for 4G.

THIS MEANS - In a few short years time, Verizon and AT&T will no longer be on different frequencies. They will be on the SAME frequency.  Meaning that once the iPhone jumps to 4G and is LTE capable, it will be SIMPLE to pop out an AT&T sim card and pop in a Verizon sim card.

So yes, Verizon WILL get the iPhone, but not yet. And why?

Verizon is set to launch its 4G network in January (data only right now). LTE is NOWHERE near ready to be put in cell phones yet.

Why would Verizon launch a CDMA only iPhone in January, a HUGE profile device, when its trying to get people to pay attention to its new LTE-4G network?

And people also forget, China is also on CDMA frequencies. Dont you think its possible that China would be the one getting all these orders?

After all is said and done, it just doesnt make logical sense for Apple to make a CDMA iPhone for Verizon when Verizon will be ditching CDMA alltogether quite soon. And it doesnt make sense for Verizon to want the iPhone now when its taking the world by storm with Android right now, AND its LTE network is launching in January.

Sorry folks. No one wants this more than me, but it just aint happening. Maybe one day in January, we will all be holding Big-Red's iPhone. But it wont be this January.

Well, Basically: A CDMA iPhone is probably coming in January, but even if it is, it wont be for Verizon.
